Drums history: NARD 13 fundamental rudiments

This file contain the first rudiment list made early last century by N.A.R.D. (National association of rudimental drummers).

Is not a valuable historycal document but is still a good thing to study as the orginal 13 rudiments are lately incorporated in 26 standar rudiments list and, today, in the PAS 40 fundamental rudiments list

Snare drum warm up: a (litttle) diddle challenge:: paraddiles in a 5 stroke roll

A simple snare cadence consisting in two five stroke roll rudiment played using two paradiddles in a 3/4 measures.

The little challenge, good for a warm up, is a change in the sticking. We have one roll played startin with right and one starting with left. Playing paradiddles this means two notes played with the same hand. First note (the ‘arrive’ of five stroke roll) is accented. So you can use different tecniques to play accent-not accent sequence

How to use George Lawrence Stone’s Stick Control to improve your pedals control on drums

Who said George Lawrence Stone ‘Stick Control’ is only for hands?
You can use this fundamental book to practice and have a lot of fun playing Stick Control exsercises with feet too.

Here some quick tips for a routine, be creative and find yours.

1. Use pages 5,6 or 7
2. Play exercises with double bass pedal, kick/hi hat and or simply to the floor
3. Play exercises as prescribed by Stone (20 times) but also practicing every bar 4/8/12/16 times: those are the standard measure lenght you’ll deal to while playing
4. when you have confidence with exercises add some hands ostinatos in order to achieve independence and coordination too

Don’t play all routine every time: choose one or two kind of exercises and have fun

If you don’t have George Lavrence Stone’s Stick Control, you really should think to add it to you library

A drum cadence is a rythmic phrase, mostly improvised, that marks a change in a music piece. A cadence indicates that something in the excution is ‘changin’ entrusting a soloist to introduce a new mood, signature or chapter in the musical performance.

A cadenza (the orginal italian word for cadence) is also “a drumline piece played in a parading marching band between or in place of full-band pieces and a chant that is sung by military personnel while parading or marching”.

A Cadenza is “an extended, improvisatory style section inserted near the end of movement. The purpose of a cadenza is to give singers or players a chance to exhibit their technical skill and – not last – their ability to improvise. Since the middle of the 19th century, however, most cadences have been written down by the composer”. (from Lilypond music glossary)
